A Travel Diary: Uganda, Italy & Malta
Getting ready to go on a Chimp Trek at Budongo Eco Lodge, Uganda
3 Countries, 3 Very Different Adventures — One Unforgettable Journey
After three amazing weeks abroad, I’ve finally unpacked my bags, done my laundry and now, I’m ready to unpack and start sharing some stories...
This summer took me on a whirlwind journey through three very different destinations: Uganda, Italy and Malta. Each place offered its own surprises, beauty and lessons. Keep reading as I share some of the poignant snapshots and stories that made a lasting impression.
🇺🇬 Uganda: Grace, Grit and Gratitude
Mission
The first part of my visit to Uganda was the most humbling leg of the trip. I joined a medical mission, unsure what to expect, but the people welcomed us with a kind of joy and hospitality that left me speechless.
Half of our time was spent at Otino Waa Children’s Village - home to more than 300 of the 2.5 million orphaned children in Uganda. Seeing how Otina Waa cares for and educates the children, as well as the different ways it interacts with the local community, was nothing short of inspiring.
The other half of our time was spent traveling to churches in remote villages where we setup makeshift clinics, providing much-needed healthcare. As we journeyed to each location, we got a glimpse into the living conditions for many of Uganda’s people:
Water comes from wells people walk miles to access and carry home in 40lb containers (often balanced on their heads).
Roads are little more than dirt paths, pockmarked with potholes, crowded with motorcycles, bicycles and pedestrians.
Homes are often small huts, open to the elements, with dirt floors and outdoor ovens or fire pits where meals are prepared.
Despite the harsh conditions, the way in which they welcomed us to their community was something I think we all could learn from. There were countless people we connected with who face hardship daily with extraordinary courage and yet, there was joy and kindness in every interaction. Being given the opportunity to engage with the people of Uganda in this deeply personal way was a gift I will never forget.
Safari
When I think of an African safari, so many images come to mind:
Lush landscapes, sweeping savannahs and majestic animals in the wild
The second part of my time in Uganda lived up to those expectations - and more! From the moment I first laid eyes on the Nile River, to our time spent hiking through the rain forest and driving across the savannah in Murchison Falls National Park, I was captivated.
🇮🇹 Italy: Pasta, Piazzas and the Pleasure of Slowing Down
Our next stop was Sicily, Italy; where every meal felt like a celebration and every corner had a story.
We wandered the narrow streets of Catania and Syracuse; made our own handmade pizza, pasta and cannoli; and sipped cappuccinos and Prosecco spritzes as we let the days unfold slowly, without rush. I’ve written before about the way some cultures invite you to slow down and savor the little moments - especially over a good meal. Sicily is undoubtedly one of those locations. After the emotionally charged time I’d spent in Uganda, embracing the slower pace of Italian life was a gift I didn’t realize just how much I needed.
In Italy, everything invites you to be present — to pause, look around and enjoy the moment. Even a simple glass of wine feels sacred when it’s shared as the sun sets over the Mediterranean or under the twinkling lights in a piazza as music rang out over the square.
Each stop on our visit to Sicily was unique:
The capital city of Catania featured open squares filled with people, music and sidewalk cafes. It was busy - not quite the slow pace I just mentioned, but still worth a visit.
Syracuse - my favorite! - was narrow alleyways, ancient architecture and stunning turquoise water. The pace was slower, the food classically Italian and the people so welcoming.
Pozzallo - our last stop before taking a ferry to Malta, this city situated on the southern coast gave off a chill, family vibe. Kids were playing and riding their bikes along the path paralleling the coastline, older couples strolled hand-in-hand late into the night, and everyone seemed to come out for gelato and karaoke.
🇲🇹 Malta — Layers of Culture in a Tiny Island Nation
Malta has been on Todd’s bucket list since we met nearly a decade ago. This summer, we finally made his wish come true and spent some time on this tiny, beautiful, historically rich island.
Nestled in the Mediterranean Sea, south of Sicily, Malta proved to be a cultural kaleidoscope with British and Arabic influences noticeable in the architecture and culture, and Italian flavors permeating much of the food. We explored ancient cathedrals and fortresses, ate fresh seafood by the sea, and soaked up the sun and salty air on the turquoise waters of the Blue Lagoon and Blue Grotto - two stunning stops on opposite sides of the island.
One of my favorite moments: wandering through the crowded streets of Msida as they celebrated the area’s patron saint, St. Joseph, at one of Malta’s many island festivals.
✈️ Final Thoughts — My “Why” for exploring the world
Every trip teaches me something. This one taught me about resilience, pleasure and curiosity. How different the world can be, and yet how connected we all are.
